Every April at Arlington High School in Massachuestts, students in an environmental club talk to freshmen about the harmful effects of plastic water bottles. The talk is part of Earth Day activities at the school, and also includes a tap-versus-bottled water taste test (The students claim that 9 out of 10 kids prefer tap water). Now three classmates in that club are fighting back against single-use plastic water bottles throughout their town.
Worded similarly to that of a ban that recently took effect in nearby Concord, the students collected 108 signatures and earned the right to ask Arlington’s Town Meeting members to ban the sale of single-serving plastic water bottles.
Viewing the bottles as harmful to the environment, the students have also been trying to have four machines that serve water bottles removed from the cafeteria at AHS.
Their proposed alternative is a filtration machine to be installed in the cafeteria. Students could pay a quarter to get water for their reusable water bottles.
The water bottle ban proposal goes to vote on April 24.
