In July, British pilot Jeremy Rowsell is planning to fly from Sydney to London in a Cessna powered by fuel derived from plastic waste. The world will be watching, as a successful trip will further the push towards alternative fuel sources.
The aircraft will be powered solely by diesel derived from “end-of-life” plastic (ELP) waste. Rowsell teamed up with Cynar PLC. The company converts end-of-life plastic waste (ELP) typically destined for landfills into useful diesel.
About five tons of plastic will be recycled to produce the 1,000 gallons of fuel needed for the trip. While the diesel produced by Cynar’s recycling process has been used many times in vehicles, Rowsell’s flight will be the first time it has been used to power an airborne journey.
